XXVIII: SO MUCH LOVE + THREE NEW VIDS

Since successfully completing our DIE JIM CROW: THE RECORD LABEL Kickstarter, there has been a lot to catch up on. I’ve spent a good part of the past couple weeks editing video content shot during the Kickstarter which I simply did not have time to complete while the campaign was in full swing… So you’ll find three cool new videos in this post.

The amount of support we got was tremendous, not only from our 335 backers, but from press, musicians, writers and activists.

Check it out:

  • REDACTED TONIGHT WITH LEE CAMP, RT. Interview with Fury Young.

  • FREEDOM RADIO, WKNY Radio Kingston. Interview with FY by Nick Panken.

  • THE INDYPENDENT, article by Olivia Riggio featuring interviews with BL Shirelle, Ach, and FY.

  • SHADOWPROOF, article by Kevin Gosztola, “Protest Song of the Week: Plastic Bag.”

  • Tweets from: Roxane Gay, Gloria Steinem, Marky Ramone, Michael Skolnick, Vera Institute of Justice, Erica Jong, and Harvard scholar Elizabeth Hinton.

  • Endorsement videos from Jadakiss and Styles of the legendary NY hip hop group The LOX.

Tweet by Roxane Gay: Die Jim Crow is a record label whose musicians are current and formerly incarcerated women and men. They have a Kickstarter that could use your support! More here:

Support also came in the form of FAN VIDEOS (shout out to Cee-Rock “The Fury”), facebook birthday fundraisers (thank you Jane Mantey), and a benefit concert at Flowers in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where musicians of many stripes came together to support our cause:

While we were stoked to have two DJC collaborators on the bill (Valerie Seeley and BL Shirelle), the spirit of the other acts vibed with our future as a label: multi-genre, prog, raw, diverse. Rock n roll baby!!!

A familiar face you’ll spot from the Flowers video is dr. Israel, who, in addition to an impressive solo career (which you can check out HERE), has been our engineer and co-producer at the five prisons we have recorded at thus far.

A few days before the Kickstarter wrapped, I stopped by revolutionsound to discuss with Doc his thoughts on Die Jim Crow expanding from a concept album to a record label.

Last but far from least, in my opinion the funnest video of the three, is “Maxwell & Fury Hit The Streets;” a short doc following our SENIOR ADVISOR and I through the trenches of Washington Square Park, where we did some good old fashioned canvassing. With only two days to raise $20K, we were determined…

The Kickstarter was quite a ride and I’m excited to now start focusing on building the label. DEPUTY DIRECTOR BL SHIRELLE and I have been on the phone almost every day planning our next moves, and I’ll just say we’ve got some stuff cookin…. 2020 is going to be a big year for Die Jim Crow. So just KEEP IT LOCKED.

Peace and Gratitude.

Fury Young
