⏳✍🏾 DJCX: C-will’s “Lasting Impression”
Charles “C-Will” Williams reflects on the creation of “First Impressions,” off the Die Jim Crow EP, and what he’s been up to since his last release. 🎙️
Ten Year Anniversary!! It seems like it was yesterday when I was writing “First Impressions.” I was in my early twenties, held against my will in a maximum prison...... hurting. I really didn't know what to expect. All I knew was this prison life was now MY LIFE. It was almost like someone gave me a thousand piece puzzle with no picture on the box and told me, "Figure this out and don't forget your life's on the line." I had to literally figure it out.
All I knew about jail was what I saw in old jail movies. So, when Fury gave me the opportunity to touch on this subject it was a great honor and privilege. I was able to express myself. I actually cried out in this song. I was telling the listeners that I didn't want to die here. I'm not supposed to be here. I have been wrongfully convicted. I made it clear that this jail life isn't for me. I couldn't succumb to this food, my cellie kept getting robbed, all these senseless killings, the racism and so much more. I'm blessed to say that I never joined a gang! I became the person I always needed. I have increased in value. Shout out to my collaborator, BL Shirelle!!! I still love your verse on “First Impressions.” You definitely made me step my game up.
I have accomplished many things since then. I'm a Licensed Stationary Engineer. I have an opportunity to work at the plant located here in the institution. I'm also in college! Soon, I will become a Licensed Barber (the first in my family). I'm also a facilitator for a few programs, and so much more. I love to encourage and push the younger generation to do better. I have to increase in value and also add to my résumé.
Thank you Fury for the opportunity! You saw things in me that I didn't see in myself. I look forward to the day when we do more work together. Last but not least I want to send a special thanks to the entire DJC family and supporters! Thank you all!
